What if I feel worse before I feel better?

Sometimes this can happen, and it does not necessarily mean counselling is not helping.

Talking about difficult experiences, emotions, or patterns can bring things closer to the surface. You might leave a session feeling emotional, tired, thoughtful, unsettled, or more aware of what has been weighing on you.

That can be part of the process.

At the same time, counselling should not feel overwhelming or unsafe. If you are finding sessions especially difficult, it is important to say so. Your counsellor can help you slow the pace, reflect on what is coming up, and consider what support may help between sessions.

Counselling is not about pushing through distress for the sake of it. It should remain a collaborative process that feels manageable enough to continue.
